Stormwater Program

Untreated Stormwater runoff is a major source of water pollution. Runoff from streets, parking lots, construction sites and private driveways go directly into storm drains and eventually into our streams, lakes and rivers. Loudon County administers a program that seeks to manage stormwater runoff before the runoff enters Ft. Loudoun Lake, Tellico Lake, Watts Bar Lake or their tributaries.

Stormwater management is required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Clean Water Act of 1972 and is regulated through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Division of Water Pollution Control. Loudon County is permitted under a Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit (MS4 Permit), which requires the County to reduce the discharge of stormwater pollutants to the maximum extent practicable, to protect water quality, and to satisfy the appropriate water quality requirements of the Clean Water Act. The area of the County covered under the permit is limited to the urbanized area of the County as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. The County reports activity annually to TDEC.
